The technique for palmas abiertas is a little more difficult to learn than for palmas sordas. You really need to practice to find the right sound.
As mentioned before your hands should be very relaxed, follow the directions of the José in the video to find the correct placement and then keep experimenting until you find a good sound.
The rhythm in this video is the same three-beat rhythm as is demonstrated in the video for palmas sordas.
